John 5:19-26 Life through the Son

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.

This is the main passage that we reviewed on Sunday morning in class. I will post some video of a few of the kids reading these verses out loud hopefully before Sunday.

I have been memorizing these verses along with Kaitlin this week. I have to say that she is much faster than me.  I took me two 45 minute bus rides to learn 5 verses!

One of the things that really struck me as I was learning these verses was how Jesus talks about how much the Father loves him.  I think I just always assumed that Jesus knew his place and his role in the events that needed to be played out. But I think Jesus was truly awed and amazed that his Father, God, would show him all these and more great things. We know Jesus came to earth and learned what it was like to be a man. But have you ever imagined what it would be like to be God's one and only Son?  Also notice that Jesus gives life to 'whom he is pleased to give it'.  Both the Father and the Son love us VERY VERY much and know each one of us inside and out. But Jesus was PLEASED to give up his life so that we can have life. How awesome is that?
